City recognizes longtime public-works employee and volunteers; residents pitch safety and environment projects

Mayor Mary Schammelhorn read a proclamation honoring Tim Lakey for 25 years of service in the city’s public works department and presented a commemorative proclamation. Earlier in the meeting, a Greater Bend Association representative (Arv) presented Beth Tackrick with a Volunteer of the Month recognition for longstanding support of community programs including the Circles effort and the community garden.
In public comment, a local restaurant representative (Susan) described plans to revive a Safe Designated Driver program and requested endorsements from local law enforcement and Mothers Against Drunk Driving; Susan explained the program aims to curtail drunk driving and asked council to help spread the word. Darcy Grayhead reported the library-screening of a pollinator documentary and announced the launch of a pollinator-pathway project that added Bandon to the national Pollinator Pathway map and will host events through the Cranberry Festival to boost native-plant awareness.
