Programming committee to survey families as RSU 18 considers full-day pre-K options

The RSU 18 programming committee reported work to explore expanding pre-K from the current half-day model. Committee member Chelsea said the meeting included all elementary principals and yielded two clear next steps: a family survey and contact with other Maine public-school programs to understand funding and transportation for full-day pre-K.
"We currently offer 0.5 day pre k in all of our elementary schools," Chelsea said; the committee plans to survey parents of current pre-K students and parents of kindergarten students who did not attend pre-K to understand how families use the other half-day and whether they would opt for full-day programming. The committee will also consult pre-K teachers and principals and consider developmental appropriateness and state requirements for offering services to four- and three-year-olds.
