The RSU 18 board voted to deny the Town of Sydney's request to use James H. Bean School as a polling place on Nov. 3. The town's representatives described space and secretary-of-state requirements — Macy Eubank, town clerk and registrar of voters, said the town has 3,335 active registered voters and therefore needs multiple voting tables — but the board cited district policy and student-safety concerns and ultimately adopted a motion to deny the request.
Board members read sections of district policy (KFB and KFB-1), noting facility use is limited to non-school hours and that the board has no immediate mechanism to override policy without a formal review. The superintendent and several board members said displacing students for a full school day would disrupt instruction and raise safety and equity issues. After discussion and requests for alternative locations, the board adopted a motion to deny Sydney's request; the chair announced, "Motion carries."
