Elementary schools report March Madness reading initiatives and student fundraisers

Carrie Brennan, principal of James Dean School, described a fourth-grade entrepreneurial unit ("Sydney Mall") in which students raised $1,200 and split the proceeds between the Maine Veterans Home and the Waterboat Humane Society. "The 4th graders have sent $1,200 divided between the Maine Veterans Home and Waterboat Humane Society," Brennan said.
Williams School principal Melanie Smith and other school leaders described the 11th annual March Madness reading tournament, planned author visits and book fairs, parent book-talk events, and a home–school common language around regulation strategies for students. Staff also reported a successful Kids Heart Challenge assembly and read-aloud activities; principals encouraged board members and families to attend upcoming events.
