KIB representatives told the McKenna meeting that youth development is a major program priority and explained how young people can apply for paid opportunities.
"Our youth tree team is going to be 60 youth from our area, 14 years or older, and enrolled in high school," Mal Chamberlain said. Chamberlain added that the youth positions are paid (she estimated the youth tree team starts at about $13 per hour and the urban naturalist positions around $17 per hour) and provide training, lunch and potential transportation assistance.
KIB said the programs are intended to be a gateway to green-collar careers, with enrichment in budgeting and job-ready skills, and that some positions include leader roles for older youth. Staff encouraged educators and neighborhood leaders to share program application information when openings are announced on the organization's website.
