Neighborhood group hears how KIB plants and maintains about 3,000 trees a year

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful staff described their community forestry program and how residents can apply to receive trees in the public right-of-way.
"We plant around 3,000 trees every single year through our community forestry program," Mal Chamberlain told the McKenna meeting, adding that KIB plants in the public right-of-way at no cost to neighbors and maintains newly planted trees for the first three years before turning them over to the city's Department of Public Works.
KIB said it works under contract with the city and the U.S. Forest Service, uses certified arborists to select species, and offers an application process for neighbors and the city to request plantings. Staff emphasized planting the "right tree in the right place" to avoid future infrastructure damage and described training and quality-control steps used during plantings.
