Rotary members win board approval for Rotary Park pollinator garden

Rotary volunteers presented a plan to install a 10-by-50-foot pollinator garden at Rotary Park and the Park Board voted to authorize city staff to work with the club on design, installation and any necessary agreements. The garden would feature perennial prairie species such as wild bergamot, coneflowers and black-eyed Susans, and include interpretive signage to educate visitors.
"We're proposing that we put in a a small pollinator garden at Rotary Park off the end of the South Parking Lot," Rotary presenter David Wenkelman said, explaining the volunteer-driven maintenance plan and a no-herbicide approach. Staff said the Rotary has identified funding sources and that the club would provide ongoing labor so the city would have little or no maintenance burden. The motion directing staff to administratively execute agreements and move forward with the installation carried by voice vote.
