Commission backs administrative review for certain driveway-width expansions

Staff proposed and the commission recommended an amendment to allow administrative review of requests to expand driveways beyond 18 feet at the property line for single-family and two-family lots established before Sept. 5, 2017. Previously such requests required appeal to the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA).
Steve (city-court representative) told the commission that smaller driveways have been creating cases in city court and recommended directing affected residents to file reasonable-accommodation requests when disabilities are involved. Staff said the change should reduce BZA appeals by allowing staff-level approval following an HRA review.
The commission approved a positive recommendation to the city council to implement administrative review, with staff noting the process requires HRA approval before administrative action.
