Superintendent reports enrollment at 569 and flags potential $30,000 bus cost increase from engine change

Superintendent Jerrad Jeske reported on enrollment and several facilities and maintenance matters at the Oct. 29 Liberty School District board meeting.
"Enrollment continues to trend positively. We currently have 569 students. That is up from where we were last time by about 5 students, and more are slated to start in November," Jeske said. He advised the board it may be prudent to purchase another bus soon because the 6.7 Cummins engine used in current bus models will be replaced by a 7.2 engine to meet new emission standards; he estimated that change could add about $30,000 to bus prices.
Jeske also listed facilities updates and proposals: surplus vehicles (1978 Chevy 1-Ton Flatbed, 1984 Chevy K2500, Massey Tractor) were sold after receiving at least three bids; Broadlink will hold a ribbon-cutting near the district wastewater plant for a high-capacity fiber connection; St. John Hardware is providing a rental tractor at $12 per hour after another vendor discontinued rentals; no new leaks have appeared at the high school; the district requested a quote from Shawn Brash for playground fencing and has an electrician's $40,000 lighting upgrade quote with a projected 2.8-year energy payback. Jeske reminded the board of the LECF Foundation Dinner on Nov. 15.
