Board hears plans for 10-MW, two-phase solar project; neighbors ask about batteries

Representatives for CVE USNY Westhampton 243 LLC described a proposed commercial-scale solar facility to be built in two 5-megawatt phases on sand-mining parcels near Old Country Road and Sunrise Highway. "The site plan special exception application for the construction of approximately, 10 megawatt commercial scale solar facility in 2 phases of 5 megawatts each with each phase will be composed of approximately 11,154 solar panels," the legal notice read, and applicant counsel confirmed the project will feed directly into the grid without on-site battery storage.
Kevin O'Brien, representing nearby property owners including the Bacone family, said they had received notice and were watching the project but were "not taking a position either for or against" at this pre-submission stage; he asked questions including whether battery storage would be part of the project, which the applicant said it would not. Board members discussed restricting future battery installation and indicated a covenant or condition could be used to preclude on‑site storage; the board closed the matter with a 10-day written comment period and recorded the vote as five yes, two absent.
