Mike Cavanaugh, Parks and Recreation director, told the council the city will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Newport Recreation Center this week, with free public access on the anniversary day and a $2.50 entry fee for the remainder of the week for all visitors. "Thursday is the actual anniversary day. So Thursday is gonna be a free day for all and anybody from the public to come into the building," Cavanaugh said, adding that the reduced $2.50 rate will run Tuesday through Sunday.
Cavanaugh said staff are decorating the facility, collecting public comments, preparing social media posts and conducting short interviews with stakeholders and patrons. He also said staff are determining whether to provide cake or snacks at the celebration and will share details when finalized. Councilors welcomed the event and noted the rec center's community value.
