Council renames Agate Beach park and dedicates dog run to late maintenance supervisor

The Newport City Council on April 6 adopted a resolution to rename Agate Beach Neighborhood and Dog Park as North Agate Beach Park and to designate the dog area as "St. Bernard's Dog Run." Mike Cavanaugh, Parks and Recreation director, told the council the planning commission reviewed and approved the proposal and that the St. Bernard's name would serve as a memorial to the late park maintenance supervisor Scott Bernards. "It's a play on words, where we incorporate dog usage into the name, but also a memorial for our late ... Scott Bernards," Cavanaugh said.
After the public hearing produced no public testimony, Councilor Ehman moved to adopt the resolution and Councilor Jacoby seconded; the chair called for the vote and the motion carried. A roll-call was then confirmed with affirmative responses. Cavanaugh said staff plans to install a plaque near the fence and to coordinate a dedication with Bernards' family once signs and plaques are ready: "We do plan on doing a plaque of some sort, maybe right there on the fence next to the sign itself," he said. Council members thanked staff and noted the action clarifies park wayfinding for visitors and locals.
