Donna Owenby, introduced as director of Beaufort County EMS, reviewed operations and finance: "We have 11 frontline units, and of that, 2 are vans that are in Daufuskie," she said, and reported total calls through May 16 of 18,579 with 12,346 billable calls and notable ALS and BLS counts. Owenby also explained revenue recovery and write-offs, saying net revenue collected so far this year is approximately $5,214,086.
Paramedic Jennifer Calcorsey described a 2015 emergency involving a 12-year-old with catastrophic head trauma and said coordinated prehospital care, fire and air medical transport were critical: "That young man's life wasn't saved by luck. It was saved by preparation, by training, by teamwork and the simple fact that help was available and ready when he needed it most," Calcorsey said. The survivor, who identified himself as Evan Efty, told the council he was the patient in that call and described a long recovery: "If EMS didn't make the choices they made... I would either be dead right now or in a wheelchair," he said, and thanked EMS staff and local employers for supporting his return to training and internships.
Councilors thanked EMS staff and asked follow-up questions about staffing and the presentation; no formal action was taken during the meeting.
