Selectboard authorizes geological sampling in Town Forest for Mount Ascutney study

The Selectboard authorized a proposed geological sampling project in the Town Forest after a presentation by Dr. Jeffery Webber, Associate Professor of Geology at Stockton University. Dr. Webber said the project aims to better understand Mount Ascutney’s volcanic history, including "the movement of magma approximately 120 million years ago when Mount Ascutney was part of an active volcano." He said the study would collect roughly 80–100 small (softball‑sized) samples around the mountain, with one to two dozen samples coming specifically from the Town Forest.
Board members discussed ecological impact and the Town Forest’s conservation easement, which forbids mining but allows educational activities; Dr. Webber said the work would use small hammers and chisels on exposed rock (no digging) and would be done in inconspicuous locations away from established trails. He indicated the work would likely occur in May and that he would provide the town with the final report and a presentation following the study.
