Council approves $108,700 masonry restoration at 21 S. Broadway venue

Aurora aldermen accepted the low bid from Safeway 2.1 LLP to perform exterior masonry restoration (tuckpointing) at the venue building at 21 South Broadway for $108,700, with a 10% contingency of $10,870.
Facilities superintendent Luca Taro explained the work is intended to preserve the building envelope: "This work is required to save the envelope of the building... by not addressing this thing, this might cause issues down the road with the foundation," he said. Taro said the work will focus primarily on the side of the building where deterioration is worst and that crews will grind out and replace mortar and bricks as needed. When aldermen asked whether the city owns the building and whether the project would affect outdoor events at the adjacent Water Street Mall, staff confirmed the city owns the venue and said the project would not require closing the building; staff will coordinate scheduling to avoid major events (Roots event on Sept. 4 was noted).
Alderman Shweta Bay moved approval and Alderman Jonathan Nunez seconded; the motion passed 4-0.
