City awards $1.53 million Benton Street sewer-separation contract, will replace ~30 lead services

The Aurora City Council unanimously approved a $1,527,260 contract July 27 for the Benton Street sewer-separation project, awarding the work to Edge Linden Sand Sewer and Water Inc. Public Works staff said the project will separate combined sewer on East Benton (between Spencer and Rose) and aims to reduce recurrent basement back-ups following a series of heavy rain events.
Kurt Muth of the Public Works Department described the problem and timeline: "This is our 2nd sewer separation job that we're looking to complete this year... a couple larger rain events... homeowners are getting basement back ups fairly regularly," and said the project also includes replacing "approximately 30 lead water services in the project area" as part of the work. The department received three bids; the low bidder's number was slightly below the engineer's estimate and staff recommended award.
Alderman Jonathan Nunez moved approval, the motion was seconded, and the council recorded a 4-0 vote to award the contract. Staff said the work is intended to proceed this year and is meant to alleviate localized flooding and sanitary backups.
