Cannabis hospitality filled 90‑minute roundtable; equity, costs and youth safety flagged

Kristen Haley, the Liquor and Cannabis Board's public health education liaison, told board members the Oct. 22 public health and cannabis roundtable had "a great turnout of about 45 people, mostly folks from the cannabis community, some LCB staff, and a handful of public health folks as well." Haley said the dialogue around cannabis hospitality consumed the full 90‑minute session and that the group largely focused on how to serve consumer demand while protecting public health.
Haley said participants raised specific operational concerns including the cost of air filtration systems and startup expenses for businesses that would host on‑site consumption. She said several attendees urged that social equity applicants be considered "from the onset of any cannabis hospitality policy changes in our state." Board member Holmes echoed that point and said the discussion began to move beyond basic clean‑air questions to consider outdoor and event‑based options for social consumption.
Panelists at the roundtable also discussed the broader social context of stigma and decriminalization, arguing that more accommodating consumption spaces could benefit people who live in rental housing with no private place to consume legally. Haley and others repeatedly flagged high‑THC products and youth access as areas of concern to be addressed alongside any hospitality expansion.
Board members asked staff to monitor stakeholder feedback and to continue convening conversations. Haley said she will distribute detailed notes to board members and co‑chair a combined cannabis and public‑health prevention roundtable scheduled for Nov. 19.
