MCPS unveils AI regulation work, staff training and vendor vetting steps

MCPS told the committee it has updated its IGS educational-technology policy to include AI-related academic-honesty provisions, is drafting a supporting regulation, and launched staff training on AI.
"We did actually launch on July 1, with our compliance training for employees an AI module," Kimberly Fields said, noting the training establishes a digital baseline while MSDE finalizes state guidance. Fields added MCPS will solicit public feedback on the AI regulation and develop professional development tied to the new rules.
Fields also described procurement controls: vendors supplying AI tools must complete an algorithmic impact assessment explaining what their AI does, how it was trained and whether it exhibits bias, and MCPS requests security reports such as SOC 2 or ISO certifications as part of the vetting process. Officials said some vendor security documentation may be proprietary and not suitable for public release.
