A Mississippi Senate committee approved advice and consent for three nominees to the State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering after hearing short statements from each candidate.
Tom Elkins of Ridgeland told the panel he has been “in the hair industry for 42 years” and that he operates a salon and is a licensed barber who employs 10 people. He said he wants the board to make it easier for people to get licensed and to “cut some red tape” that discourages entry into the profession. Todd Freeman, who said he owns two salon locations in Madison and Jackson and has previously served on the board, described the board as “very cohesive” and urged the committee to continue his service. Aaron Washington, introduced himself as the owner of Aaron Watts Barber Shop in Tupelo, said he earned his barber license in 1993 and expressed enthusiasm for serving on the board.
After the three nominees spoke, the committee chair moved that the panel give advice and consent. The committee responded by voice; the chair said, “The ayes have it,” and added the committee would report the confirmations to the full Senate. The vote was taken by voice and the committee record includes only the chair’s announcement that the ayes prevailed.
