Aurora urges residents to complete special census to reclaim $4.3M in annual funding

City speakers said the 2020 census undercount cost Aurora an estimated 17,000 residents and about $4.3 million annually in federal and state funding.
“The city of Aurora fell 17,000 people short, which is costing us $4,300,000 each and every year that we go without an accurate account,” the presiding official said during the report. Staff noted that residents in the special census area received a unique 12‑digit code and that the city’s special census webpage lists a map showing the affected portions of all 10 wards (www.aurora.al.us/specialcensus).
Officials encouraged residents to complete the confidential special census form, saying the result influences police, fire and community services staffing and long‑term planning. City staff also said canvassing and additional mailings would continue through August, with the U.S. Census Bureau taking over operations on August 24.
