Council weighs preserving community building vs. replacement; exterior work prioritized

The Community Building’s maintenance needs moved higher on the council agenda in late 2013 after assessments showed water damage, leaking ceilings and HVAC failures.
Council Member Esther Shields and City Clerk Devona Herrin compiled a prioritized list of deficiencies—roof and gutter repairs, interior water damage, failing HVAC and a leaking exterior wall north of City Hall. The council scheduled a workshop with Legacy Contractors on Dec. 10 to scope repairs, preserve structural fabric and estimate costs. Herrin reported insurance would replace several damaged HVAC units and the city sought estimates for masonry repairs to exterior walls.
Why it matters: The community building hosts civic events, chamber meetings and public functions, and needs a plan that balances preservation costs against replacement. Council members said the first priority is stabilizing the structure and preventing further water intrusion.
Next steps: Legacy Contractors will meet the council in a workshop to outline an actionable repair scope and cost estimates. The council will then consider grant options, budgeting and possible phased repairs.
