La Cygne redirects county infrastructure funding to cemetery and sewer maintenance

At a special session the council rescinded an earlier $25,000 allocation for a fire station and committed that amount to cemetery-road maintenance after engineering and public-works input showed lower-cost cemetery repairs were urgent. "We can use these county funds to mill and gravel the paved portion of the cemetery road and add crushed rock to gravel sections," Public Works reported. The council also approved contracting with Killough Construction to mill a portion of Lincoln Street and use county infrastructure funds for targeted cemetery road work.
Council also approved using $29,684 from county infrastructure funds for sewer-line cleaning (Reddi-Rooter) to address problem sections. Public Works Superintendent Jim Johnson told the council the company quoted per-foot cleaning rates and the work had located blockages and obstructions. Council members said prioritizing sewer lines and cemetery roads would give residents the most immediate benefit while they continue to pursue long-term projects such as a new station or street improvements.
What happens next: Councilors asked staff to coordinate with the Cemetery Association to set priorities and contract timelines; Reddi-Rooter work is underway per the approved scope and budget.
