The Mabton City Council voted to approve a $100,000 periodic update grant contract with the Washington State Department of Commerce and the Yakima Valley Conference of Governments to update the city's comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, subdivision ordinance and critical areas ordinance. Fireman Gabbos of the Yakima Valley Conference of Governments described the contract as split across multiple subcontracts and said the work will move through the planning commission before returning to council.
"So the total contract, I believe, was a $100,000," Fireman Gabbos said, and he outlined that the contract runs from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, with a legislative extension that creates a partial contract from July 1, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2026. Councilmember Diane moved to approve the periodic update grant and the motion carried after a second and a voice vote. The council was told the update includes required code changes and a land-capacity/population analysis; staff and the Yakima Valley COG planning team will carry the work forward via the planning commission process.
