Sarasota County School Board approves tentative millage rate of 5.929 mills

The Sarasota County School Board on July 28 voted unanimously to adopt tentative millage rates that together total 5.929 mills for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
"The total proposed millage for the 26–27 school year is 5.929 mills, which is below the rollback rate of 7.148 mills," said CFO Miss Jurimchek during the budget presentation. The board later recorded a unanimous voice vote after Mrs. Rose moved and Mrs. Barker seconded the motion to approve the rates as presented.
The adopted components listed by staff were: required local effort (RLE) 2.681 mills (2.67 certified plus a 0.005 prior-period adjustment), voter-approved operating referendum 1.000 mil, basic discretionary 0.748 mil and capital outlay 1.500 mil. The board and staff said the RLE must be levied to participate in the state FEFP funding formula used in revenue estimates.
Board members took no separate recorded roll-call on individual components; the single voice vote approved the package as presented. Staff said these tentative rates will be finalized after further refinement of revenues and expenditures and will return to the board for final adoption at the Sept. 15 public hearing.
