County planning commission recommends swap of parcels in Mabton UGA; city staff expresses support

At a Yakima County hearing, staff had proposed removing a southern industrial parcel from Mabton’s urban growth area (UGA) and adding acreage north of town. The county planning commission recommended keeping the industrial parcel and adding roughly 37 acres north of Mabton as residential; Mabton staff and the mayor support adding the acreage and will convey that to county commissioners.
Byron briefed the Mabton Planning Commission on a Yakima County Planning Commission hearing about Mabton’s urban growth area boundary. County staff proposed removing a 40-acre industrial parcel south of town and adding land north of Mabton, but the county planning commission departed from staff and recommended leaving the industrial parcel in the UGA while adding a roughly 37-acre residential area north of town.
"The planning commission recommended to leave this within the urban growth area designated as industrial and add this to the UGA," Byron said. He told Mabton’s planning commission that he had discussed the matter with the mayor and would communicate the city’s support to the Yakima County Board of County Commissioners when the item reaches them. Byron said the suggested addition would facilitate residential development in an area served by water and sewer lines and could allow existing incomplete right-of-way work to be finished.
No action was required by Mabton’s planning commission because the UGA amendment is a county jurisdictional matter; Byron said city support could nonetheless influence the county commissioners’ decision.
