Resident urges code changes after long‑running backyard encampment

Melinda Mansuri, who said she has lived in South Jordan for 28 years, told the council that a homeless encampment next to her back fence ‘‘has been next to my back fence since November’’ and includes generators and a porta‑potty that she described as the ‘‘last straw.’’ She said she has worked with Council member Johnson, code enforcement and the health department but that ‘‘there's just not a code to enforce,’’ leaving neighbors exposed to disruptive and potentially criminal activity.
Mayor Dawn Ramsey thanked Mansuri for bringing the issue and said staff would follow up: ‘‘We'll talk to the right folks and figure out what that is,’’ she told the resident. The council did not take immediate action at the meeting; Mansuri urged the city to review existing ordinances governing outdoor camping and temporary habitation on private residential property so enforcement options are clearer.
