Commission commits up to $382,500 for Bridge I-19.7 replacement; majority asks Newton to share cost

The commission approved and signed the Project Agreement for KLBIP project 40C-5386-01 to replace Bridge I-19.7 on SW 14th Street, a 253-foot, five-span concrete-and-steel bridge built in 1960 that was rated POOR in the last biennial inspection. Under KLBIP the state will fund 85% of construction costs and the county is responsible for up to 15% of construction (approx. $382,500 of a $2,550,000 estimate).
Commissioners discussed whether to request cost-sharing from the City of Newton because of the bridge’s proximity to city limits. Commissioner Don Schroeder said he preferred to delay the discussion with the city about sharing costs until after the project was completed; the commission subsequently voted 2–1 to direct staff to contact City of Newton staff about sharing a portion of the county funding commitment (opposed: Schroeder).
