Alabama parole board denies most requests, grants a subset of paroles and pardons

At its July 23 meeting in Montgomery the Alabama Board of Pardons & Paroles denied many parole requests, granted several paroles with conditions and approved multiple pardons; at least one hearing produced a split vote and the board used executive session to review files.
The Alabama Board of Pardons & Paroles met July 23, 2026, in Montgomery and acted on a 34‑case docket covering paroles, pardons, reinstatements and revocations. Chair Hal Nash, Board Members Gabrelle Simmons and Jennifer Conway presided; Nicole Lewis served as board secretary. The meeting opened at 8:36 a.m. and adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
On the docket the board denied a substantial share of parole requests and set a variety of reset dates (commonly July 2027–2031). The board also granted multiple pardons and a smaller number of paroles with special conditions. For example, the board voted to grant a full pardon to Charles E. Lang and to grant parole with conditions (approved halfway house, GPS ankle monitor, mental‑health follow‑up, drug assessment) to Nicholas D. Childress and others. The meeting record shows repeated use of executive session to review files before voting; several contested hearings included supportive testimony from family members and witnesses and opposition from victims’ relatives and a Victim Services Officer from the Attorney General’s Office (Ky'Toria Lawson, VSO).
Board business included approval of minutes from the July 22 meeting (motion by Gabrelle Simmons, seconded by Jennifer Conway). The board reviewed attached lists of files for revocation and delinquent files before adjourning. The next scheduled meeting is July 28, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. at the same location.
