Board approves Oneals' home-based auto repair permit, ties approval to nuisance abatement

The Jones County Board of Adjustment on Nov. 18 approved a special permitted use allowing Ethan and Anna Oneal to operate an automotive repair business as a home-based business on a 5.82-acre parcel at 15913 Hwy 136 in Scotch Grove Township. The motion carried on a unanimous roll-call vote (John Hinz, Kathy McDonell, Sarah Tate, Roger Kistler and Stan Reiter — all aye).
Whitney Amos, the county Land Use Administrator, told the board it had received the application, an aerial map and a written staff report and that no outside comments had been submitted. Applicant Ethan Oneal said he has been running the repair operation from the property for about a year and a half, currently has no employees and does not plan to expand. The board discussed a current nuisance complaint about the property and recorded concern about its condition.
The board’s approval includes a condition that if the nuisance is not abated and the property owner is cited for the nuisance, the home-based business approval will be retracted. The board closed the public hearing at 3:43 p.m. before voting to approve the permit with that condition.
