Frank Barbosa urges county review after vehicle drove over his white cane at Maui County Building

Frank Barbosa told the Commission on Persons with Disabilities that the rear entrance and adjacent parking area at the Maui County Building, 200 High Street in Wailuku, lack adequate accessible pathways and pose pedestrian safety risks. Barbosa reported a recent incident in which “a vehicle drove over his white cane” while he was walking near the curb and asked the County to evaluate the area and consider improvements.
The Commission noted that the Mayor had directed the Department of Public Works and the County ADA Coordinator to review the concerns and provide a written summary of findings and recommended short‑ and long‑term actions by Feb. 27, 2026. Commissioner Jacqueline Keefe moved to draft a letter addressing Barbosa’s testimony and related accessibility concerns; Vice Chair Lehua Chang seconded and the motion passed (6-0, 2 absent); Commissioner Victor Lesa was not present for that vote. Chair Francine Aarona said the Commission would follow up after the DPW summary is submitted.
