Sheriff contracts renewed; board approves new squad on 3-1 vote

Lincoln County Sheriff Bob Bushman presented several law enforcement items at the Dec. 16 board meeting, including contract renewals and a vehicle replacement request.
Bushman recommended renewal of the Medical Examiners contract for Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2026 with automatic renewals through Dec. 31, 2031; the board approved the contract. He also presented law enforcement contracts for the City of Lake Benton (20 hours per month) and the City of Ivanhoe (15 hours per month), and asked to keep the City of Hendricks contract in place until the city approves a new agreement; the board approved those arrangements.
Bushman said one of the departments squads was damaged after hitting a deer and had about 142,000 miles; he recommended replacement. Bids included Lockwood Motors ($44,660), Nelson Auto Center ($45,492), and two John Jones options ($46,507.50 and $46,706.50). The motion to purchase the Lockwood Motors vehicle for $44,660 passed with Hauswedell, Nielsen and Sik voting yes and Commissioner Drietz voting no; the minutes record the motion carried by majority vote. The board also declared the replaced squad surplus once the new vehicle is in service.
Bushman suggested restricting any remaining budget balance to fund a future jail control board; the board will review restricted balances in March.
