Board hears 2023–24 statewide test results; district shows solid proficiency but flat growth

The board received a staff presentation on 2023–24 statewide assessments covering English language arts, math, science and ELPAC results for English learners. Superintendent Dr. Wilds said the district’s aggregate ELA results were strong but growth over time has been flat, and he recommended targeted curriculum and instructional strategies to address subgroup disparities.
"So overall, spring 20 24, Hermosa ELA ... we had 77, almost 78% that met or exceeded," Dr. Wilds said, noting that nearly 43% of students were exceeding standards in ELA while about 16% were just below meeting standards. He told the board science scores lag behind ELA and math and pointed to subgroup differences by disability status, English‑learner status and ethnicity as areas for further focus.
Board members asked whether the district can compare practices with neighboring districts once embargoed statewide comparisons are released; staff said they will analyze peer districts after the state publishes the data. Staff also outlined next steps including fidelity of the FOSS science curriculum in grades 5–8, continued foundations literacy work in TK–3, use of formative assessments to drive instruction and consideration of a future middle‑school math adoption to improve long‑term outcomes.
