Healdsburg Unified board reaffirms schools as a "safe haven" for students

The Healdsburg Unified School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved Resolution 25‑13, reaffirming the district’s commitment to ensuring that all students are safe and welcomed at school irrespective of immigration status. A district official introduced the measure as an update to a 2016 resolution intended to reassure families amid recent changes in immigration rhetoric.

The resolution directs the superintendent to support creation of a “safe haven” status for district school sites, allocate resources for diversity and inclusion, host cultural‑proficiency training, and work with city and county partners and community organizations. It also states the district “does not collect data on the immigration status of students or families” and reaffirms the superintendent’s authority to protect personally identifiable information “to the fullest extent provided by law.” The measure further says the district will not allow ICE agents on school sites without prior written approval from the superintendent.

Trustee (speaker 7) moved for passage and the motion was seconded. The board approved the resolution by roll call: President Grama Flores (aye), Vice President Lopez Jimenez (aye), Trustee Potmasil (aye), Trustee McAllister (aye), Trustee Lopez Pardo (aye) and the student trustee (aye). A district official said the resolution was written to provide reassurance after staff observed “fear and sorrow” among some families when the text was read at a district parent meeting in Spanish. The board indicated the resolution will be placed on the district website and communicated to families.
