Read Camp leaders report expanded programming, donor-funded slots

District presenters summarized this summer’s Read Camp, describing two-week sessions that served 65 campers with a staff including 17 counselors, kitchen staff, lifeguards and volunteers, and $64,000 in partnership funding. A presenter said the camp included four reading rotations, journals in every rotation, theater, poetry workshops and nature nonfiction activities that used local outdoor resources.
Presenters and student counselors highlighted outcomes such as increased student willingness to read aloud, returning campers serving as counselors, and original plays written for the program. The camp team thanked Bishop’s Ranch and district transportation staff for support; one presenter noted that several students who were initially socially anxious flourished and “felt comfortable and able to, like, be herself and stand up and read into the mic.”
