County Attorney Glen Petersen told the board that James Sorensen has passed away and that a previously appointed power of attorney lapses at death. Petersen recommended the county pay the delinquent taxes and pursue an affidavit of survivorship to transfer the property to the county. The board authorized payment of the taxes on a motion by Mic VanDeVere, seconded by Corey Sik; the vote was unanimous (4-0).
Petersen noted Sorensen will be buried in the cemetery located on the property and said he will contact Lake Benton Bank to determine whether funds have been set aside for cemetery care. The motion authorizes the county to pay taxes now so county counsel can complete the statutory steps to transfer title in accordance with county procedures.
