Local rescue asks Lincoln County to fund initial vet care for dumped cats; commissioners defer decision

Cricket Raschke of Windy Kitty Community told the Lincoln County Board she seeks an appropriation to cover initial veterinary care for up to 10 abandoned or unwanted cats, including spay/neuter, rabies and distemper vaccines, blood testing and flea/worm treatment. Raschke outlined per-animal costs of $247.07 for males and $316.37 for females and asked for a total appropriation not to exceed $3,200.00.
Commissioner Mic VanDeVere said he believes pet owners — not taxpayers — should fund such care, and suggested enforcing existing city ordinances; Commissioner Joe Drietz also questioned using county tax dollars. Chair Steve Hauswedell asked how much Windy Kitty spends annually; Raschke said the organization spent about $110,000 on cat care last year and that many area shelters are full. The board did not vote and suggested tabling the request while staff checks practices in other counties.
