Draft ordinance would curb monopole signs and revise monument-size and setback rules

The proposed sign ordinance would bar new monopole (single-pole) signs on non-freeway roadways and allow only encased pylon signs on freeway frontage, staff told the commission. "This would prohibit that," Wes said when describing the change that would remove pole or pylon signs from non-freeway property except under the limited pylon definition.
Commission members pressed staff on monument-sign dimensions and setbacks. One commissioner said, "8 feet seems a little tall for a monument sign as a maximum height," and staff replied that 7–8 feet is common among peer cities; staff proposed a maximum monument area of 75 square feet, a 7-foot single-tenant height baseline and 150 feet spacing between signs on a property in many cases. The commission discussed possibly increasing the proposed 5-foot nonresidential setback to 10 feet to preserve sight lines and pedestrian space.
