City planning staff told commissioners the draft is intended to be a near-complete rewrite of Bedford’s sign ordinance, which staff said was last substantially updated in 2012. "The bulk of the existing sign ordinance ... was adopted last in 2012," said Wes, the planning presenter, adding the rewrite aims to balance business advertising opportunities with safety and the city’s appearance.
Commissioners raised numerous implementation and policy questions during the workshop, including whether older signs would be grandfathered indefinitely, how enforcement would be escalated, and whether the commission should retain or tweak allowances for secondary wall signage. Staff said many nonconforming signs would remain legal until altered or removed and that staff would return with revisions based on commission feedback.
