ADEM water division: draft NPDES permit would authorize discharges to Dry Creek and Spring Creek

Robert Glover, an environmental engineering specialist in ADEM’s water division, told the hearing that the draft NPDES permit (AL0084523) would authorize treated effluent discharges from the proposed limestone quarry’s two outfalls into Dry Creek and Spring Creek. "Dry Creek and Spring Creek are classified as being suitable for fish and wildlife," Glover said, noting the draft permit was developed to meet applicable state and federal water quality requirements.
Glover also reminded the public that ADEM’s authority is limited to water quality and discharges; the department "does not have authority to regulate the mining activities itself or these other important topics," he said. The department will reconsider its preliminary determination after reviewing written and oral comments received during the public comment period.
