Board notes school outreach, syphilis outbreak context and upcoming community events

Board approved Rapid HIV and Teen Success claims and heard that a new health educator has reached more than 3,000 students; staff reported a 2024 syphilis outbreak in Iowa of over 1,000 cases and upcoming public events including Health Kids Day (May 9) and a Community Baby Shower (April 25).
The board approved 4th quarter Rapid HIV testing and Teen Success claims after a motion by Jenna Lovaas and second by Don Thiltgen (vote 4-0). Staff reported ongoing Rapid HIV/Syphilis testing and school-based education efforts.
Heather Montgomery and other providers told the board that the new health educator has worked with more than 3,000 students to date. Officials noted a 2024 syphilis outbreak in Iowa with more than 1,000 cases; 2025 case totals were not yet available. Planned community events include a Community Baby Shower on April 25 at Journey Church in Clinton and Health Kids Day on May 9 at the Maquoketa YWCA.
Board members supported exploring the Healthy Hometowns grant to expand screening and prevention services; staff will report back on grant feasibility and next steps.
