Cliff Harper, the project's hydrogeologist, reviewed the site's remediation history and described remaining contamination as a dissolved gasoline plume in groundwater containing components such as benzene and toluene. "What remains is a... dissolved plume, gasoline components like benzene and toluene," Harper said, explaining that benzene exceedances exist though the site was given a certificate of completion by the state around 2006.
Harper and the team said they plan further sampling and, if contaminated soil pockets are found during construction, to excavate and dispose of those soils. They also described removing monitoring points and a buried bio-barrier structure as part of a state-approved plan; the team emphasized coordination with the state's brownfields and water regulators to finalize cleanup steps.
