Bellaire council authorizes purchase of replacement marked police vehicle after insurer totaled unit

Council unanimously authorized April 6 the city manager to execute documentation and amend the FY2026 budget to purchase a replacement marked fleet police vehicle from Silsbee Ford Inc. for up to $89,272.22.
Interim Police Chief Shane O'Sullivan said the vehicle that needs replacement was involved in a February pursuit and was declared a total loss by the city’s insurer (TML). "TML ultimately returned and said that it was totaled, and so they provided a portion of that return to our budget," O'Sullivan said, explaining the need to appropriate funds from the vehicle, equipment and technology fund.
Council asked about salvageable equipment, vendor lead times and warranties. O'Sullivan said some equipment can be reclaimed depending on the insurer's claim and that current lead times for outfitted police vehicles are about six to eight months, though timelines are improving compared with earlier post‑pandemic delays. The ordinance passed without opposition.
