Council approves SUP for outdoor seating at McKay’s restaurant, rejects on-site pickleball for now

The Bedford City Council held a public hearing and approved a Specific Use Permit for outdoor seating at the property commonly known as 2208 Central Drive (McKay's Restaurant Addition Block 1, Lot 1) while excluding a proposed pickleball area.
Development Director Wes Morrison explained the request was two-part: formalizing existing outdoor seating that had been installed without permits and reviewing a proposed outdoor-amusement (pickleball) area near the law-enforcement center. Morrison said Planning and Zoning recommended approval with two conditions: that the outdoor seating area be screened by evergreen shrubs and that the outdoor-amusement (pickleball) use be denied due to location and design concerns. Morrison noted notification was sent to adjoining owners and no responses were received and that P&Z voted 7–0 in favor of the recommended conditions.
Council opened the public hearing; no members of the public spoke and the hearing was closed. After clarifying questions about screening height and hours, the council moved to approve the SUP with the stipulated screening; council members also noted the applicant could reapply if it wanted to redesign the pickleball element. Mayor Pro Tem Michelle Dawkins seconded the motion and the ordinance passed unanimously.
