Council hears $2 million estimate for water-main upgrade tied to larger street project

Staff described a potential larger SCA candidate that would include roadway widening, curb and gutter, sidewalks and related stormwater upgrades; those elements can strengthen an SCA application but also raise the local match and coordination needs. “That water main upgrade is probably $2,000,000 now,” a staff member said when discussing the water-main work that would accompany a corridor upgrade and how SDC funds could be used to make a project more compelling to reviewers.
Councilors and staff discussed site options for required infrastructure, including whether recently acquired buyout lots could host assets; they concluded that while the buyout parcels could be used, doing so would introduce engineering, pumping and permitting challenges. Staff will continue cost estimating and circulation with engineering to refine the scope and potential fund sources before any formal application pairing water upgrades with SCA submissions.
