Councilwoman Miles spoke to the EDC about Leadership Southwest, explaining the application cycle, class schedule and professional-development benefits she gained from participation.
Miles said applications typically open in late summer and run through fall, classes meet once a month on a weekday (the third Wednesday) as full-day sessions from about 8 a.m. and run January through November with July off and a November graduation. "The class that I went through it with, we still talk to one another," she said, describing networking benefits and civic-learning takeaways such as a Civic Academy idea that her class inspired.
Miles confirmed Leadership Southwest offers sponsorships for candidates and said candidates may apply for sponsored slots; she also described typical class sizes (around 35–50) and suggested the city could consider sponsoring candidates if the council chose to do so. Staff and the board discussed circulating the application and coordinating sign-ups for interested board members.
