Superintendent: notifications to affected staff could begin May 1; union timing influenced schedule

Doctor Ludwig told the board the licensed association asked this year that the district delay RIF notifications until after spring break; the association then requested that members be told beginning in May. The superintendent said that, with the board’s approval, staff notifications and assignment transfers could start as early as May 1.
“Tomorrow is May 1,” Doctor Ludwig said. “And so to honor that ask again by our licensed association, we can begin that process of notification.” He added the district will pair notifications with transfer assignments so most staff will know where they will be assigned next year and that the district may recall positions if retirements or resignations change the staffing picture.
Board members expressed concern about the human impact of the reductions and sought to ensure staff and the community received clear information. The superintendent said the district will follow statutory procedures and the collective-bargaining agreement for notifications and recalls.
