Amarillo Fire Department honored with Texas Fire Chiefs best-practice recognition

The Amarillo City Council on Thursday presented a plaque to the Amarillo Fire Department after the department earned the Texas Fire Chiefs Association best-practice recognition.
Neil Howard of the Texas Fire Chiefs Association described the designation as earned "through hard work, accountability, and commitment to excellence," saying departments must demonstrate compliance with more than 114 individual best practices covering emergency operations, training, risk reduction and financial accountability. Howard commended Chief Mays and the department leadership for their work in meeting the standards.
Chief Mays thanked the mayor, council and city management and said the recognition is "not a finish line" but an accountability milestone the department will maintain. Council and staff joined department members for a formal plaque presentation and a photo opportunity.
The recognition places Amarillo in a select group of departments across Texas that have completed the rigorous, multi‑year assessment; city leaders said the honor reflects work across operations, training and community engagement.
