Butler County will treat state highways for noxious weeds under 2026 KDOT agreement

Butler County approved an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation for noxious-weed treatment along state highways in 2026.
Noxious Weed Supervisor Ryan Lee explained that KDOT requests annual agreements with counties to treat state-rights-of-way and that KDOT reimburses chemical costs at actual cost and equipment and labor based on a competitive proposal process. Regular reports will be submitted to KDOT as treatments occur and the county will request reimbursement based on documented expenses.
The Board approved the 2026 agreement (motion passed 5-0). Lee also told the Board the Noxious Weed Department has received a new vehicle and that staff have taken it to Sedan for bed construction; final vehicle setup in Wichita is pending and Lee does not expect it to be ready before the end of the 2026 season.
The agreement continues a long-standing practice of county-level weed control along state corridors with KDOT reimbursement.
