Butler County approves consolidated flu vaccine purchase; freezer failure prompts replacement order

Butler County's Health Department will place a consolidated order for the 2026 influenza season and the Board approved the purchase at the April 14 meeting.
Health Department Director Jamie Downs asked the Board to approve two purchase orders: Sanofi Pasteur for $197.44 and Seqirus for $18,056.61. The Health Department said it is ordering for the entire season to avoid shortages later in the season and plans to offer Fluad for people 65 and older (tentatively $118.50 to the public) and Fluzone or Flucelvax for those six months and older (tentatively $69.75).
Downs also reported an equipment failure: the Health Department's vaccine refrigerator stopped working and froze the vaccines stored inside. The State is sending replacement vaccine doses and the department ordered a new refrigerator last Friday at a cost of $6,800. The Board approved the purchase orders and authorized the chair to sign; the motion carried 5-0.
The Health Department noted most insurance plans cover influenza vaccines; for uninsured patients, vaccines are obtained through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
