Butler County to pay $12,633.40 to rebuild burned guardrail; landowner billing disputed

Public Works Director Curtis Mader asked the commission to approve a $12,633.40 bid from J&J Contractors to rebuild a guardrail damaged by pasture burns near SE Gray Rd. and SE Rosalia Keighley Rd. A pasture burn earlier this spring damaged the north-side guardrail and an earlier fire had damaged a north-side section at an earlier time. Mader said the County will send a bill of $6,630.20 to the south landowner for reimbursement.
Board members pushed back on charging a single landowner for half the rebuild because they said the damage has been occurring for the last 10 years and "if one landowner is being charged all landowners should be charged; charging landowners is not a pick and choose." The Board approved paying the full $12,633.40 from County funds by motion (5-0). Mader requested that Public Works be notified when residents call for burn permits so staff can be informed of pasture burns.
